Carpal Tunnel Diagnosis Tool

Do you have hand or finger pain, numbness or tingling?

Do any of these wake you up at night?

The most common conditions causing this are:

  • carpal tunnel syndrome

  • flexor tendonitis

Find out which you have with this simple, self-testing tool.

  • Find a quiet room to do these tests.

  • Distractions will give unreliable results, so make sure you're not disturbed.

  • An assistant who is willing and positive can help you.

  • Follow steps 1 to 4.

While holding your fingers straight, flex your wrist gently and as far as possible. Use your other hand (or your helper's) to push a little. Hold this position for 1 minute. (This is the Phalen test.)

Do your symptoms appear or get worse? Do you feel numbness?

With your hand straight, use an opposite finger (or your helper's) to lightly tap the skin over your wrist-crease. Tap left to right, and back again (This is the Tinel test.)

Does it result in a tingling or “pins-and-needles” in your hand?

Keeping your hand straight, use your opposite thumb (or your helper's) to apply firm pressure to your hand. Press the thumb firmly, in between the the big bumps at the base of your hand. Do this for 30 seconds. (This is the Durkan test.)

Does this make your symptoms appear or get worse? Do you feel numbness?

If you answered "yes" to ANY of the above questions, then you likely have carpal tunnel syndrome. The Carpal Rx can definitely eliminate carpal tunnel symptoms!

If you answered "no" to ALL of the above questions, then go to Step 4.

Use two fingers to tap your flexor tendons just below your wrist crease. (This is the flexor percussion test.) The tendons are the rope-like structures on the palm side (not the back side) of your forearm. Tap each tendon all along its length, halfway to your elbow. Tap several times up and down on each tendon. Then tap vigorously all around your forearm.

Does any of the tapping reproduce your symptoms or make them worse?

If you answered "yes" to Step 4, then you likely have flexor tendonitis instead of carpal tunnel syndrome. The Carpal Rx can definitely eliminate tendonitis symptoms!
